How to shoot for the moon

Declare A Mission, Not a major.

How to Shoot for the Moon is a kaleidoscope of curriculum inspired by the science and art of space exploration.

Our mission is to help students discover who they are, why they’re here, where they want go and how to experiment towards getting there.

Watch the first launch of How to Shoot for the Moon from Spring 2023 @ Stanford.

  • Debbie G. Senesky is an Associate Professor at Stanford University in the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department and by courtesy, the Electrical Engineering Department. In addition, she is the Principal Investigator of the EXtreme Environment Microsystems Laboratory (XLab). Her research interests include the development of nanomaterials for extreme harsh environments, high-temperature electronics for Venus exploration, and microgravity synthesis of nanomaterials. In the past, she has held positions at GE Sensing (formerly known as NovaSensor), GE Global Research Center, and Hewlett Packard. She received the B.S. degree (2001) in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California. She received the M.S. degree (2004) and Ph.D. degree (2007) in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Prof. Senesky is the Site Director of nano@stanford. She is currently the co-editor of two technical journals: IEEE Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems and Sensors. In recognition of her research, she received the Emerging Leader Abie Award from AnitaB.org in 2018, Early Faculty Career Award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 2012, Gabilan Faculty Fellowship Award in 2012, and Sloan Ph.D. Fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in 2004.

Prof. Senesky's career path and research has been featured on Seeker, People Behind the Science podcast, The Future of Everything radio show, Space.com, and NPR's Tell Me More program. More information about Prof. Senesky can be found at https://xlab.stanford.edu and on Instagram (@astrodebs).

  • Seamus Yu Harte is the founder of Only People, a learning experience design studio based in Palo Alto, CA and the Head of Learning Experience Design for the Electives Program at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (aka the d.school). Prior to Only People and the d.school, Seamus was the Senior Producer for the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, Learning Experience Designer at Digital Media Academy and Creative Director and Director of Radical Experiments at Nearpod. From Yoko Ono to David Kelley, Seamus has had the opportunity to teach and learn with world-class creatives. He holds a BS in Sound Design from SAE and a MFA in Documentary Film + Video from Stanford University where he also received Fellowships from The Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts (SiCA) and The San Francisco Foundation.

  • Miki is an innovation strategist, exploring the intersection of humanity-centered design and science and tech, for future generation on and off Earth. She is a seasonal lecturer at Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (better known as d.school) at Stanford University, in parallel to her private practice under Ottento LLC. In her previous role as a Commercial Innovation Program Manager at Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS; or better known as the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory), she advocated utilization of space environment to advance science, technology and R&D to higher potentials. Miki oversaw CASIS activities around developing strategic partnerships with NASA to other governmental agencies, startups to Fortune 500 companies, financial sectors from VCs to philanthropic organizations, and K-12 education program organizers to academic institutions, with particular focus in Silicon Valley. Miki has a B.A. in Physics from UC Berkeley, a M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from San Jose State University and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UC San Francisco & Berkeley joint program.
